Answering modes: Full AI, AI Backup, and Ring Me First
4 min · updated Jul 24, 2026
In short
Decide when Ahoya picks up. AI Backup answers only the calls you miss, Full AI answers every call 24/7, and Ring Me First rings your cell first and lets the AI catch the rest — all set by forwarding your number, with no porting.
01AI Backup — your phone rings first
Callers hear your normal ring and your team answers like always. Only missed calls — when you're busy, closed, or nobody picks up — roll over to the AI. This is the safest way to start: you lose nothing, and the AI simply catches what would have gone to voicemail.
Recommended default. Available on every plan.
02Full AI — the AI answers everything
Your phone never rings for inbound calls; every caller reaches the AI receptionist instantly, 24/7. Best when nobody can reliably cover the phone, or after hours and on weekends.
Available on every plan.
03Ring Me First — we ring your cell, then hand off
Calls route through an Ahoya relay number. During your business hours your personal phone rings first for about 20 seconds; if you don't pick up — or it's after hours — the AI answers. You get first crack at every call without risking a missed one.
Ring Me First is a Growth-plan feature. AI Backup and Full AI work on every plan.
04How you switch modes
Open Numbers in your dashboard and pick the mode when you connect or forward your line. Ahoya shows the exact carrier forwarding code for your setup — it's a quick carrier setting with no porting and no downtime, and you can change modes whenever you like.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between AI Backup and Ring Me First?
AI Backup relies on your carrier's “forward when unanswered/busy” — your phone rings and only true misses reach the AI. Ring Me First routes through an Ahoya relay that rings your cell first for ~20 seconds during open hours, giving more predictable hand-off timing and after-hours coverage. Ring Me First is Growth-plan.
Will I lose calls while I test a mode?
No. Every mode ends at the AI, so an unanswered call is answered rather than dropped. You can switch modes at any time from Numbers.
