Install the Ahoya chat with Google Tag Manager

5 min · updated Sep 20, 2026

In short

Google Tag Manager lets you add the Ahoya website chat without editing your site's code, and reports chats, captured leads and bookings to Google Analytics so you can see what the chat is worth.

What lands where: The chat bubble appears on every page your trigger covers, and each chat, captured lead and booking arrives in Google Analytics as its own event.

  1. 01Copy your install snippet

In Ahoya go to Assistant → Web chat → Install and switch the tab to Google Tag Manager. The snippet already has your widget key in it.

  2. 02Create a Custom HTML tag

In Tag Manager choose New tag → Tag Configuration → Custom HTML and paste the snippet.

  3. 03Trigger it on All Pages

All Pages is safe — the loader waits for the page to exist before it adds anything. Pick a narrower trigger only if you want chat on some pages and not others.

  4. 04Submit, then Publish

A container that is saved but not published loads nothing. This is the step people miss when the chat doesn't appear.

Frequently asked questions

Which events does the chat send to Google Analytics?
Four: ahoya_chat_opened when a visitor opens the chat, ahoya_chat_started on their first message, ahoya_lead_captured when they leave their details, and ahoya_booking_requested when the AI actually books something. Each carries only the conversation id — never a visitor's name, email or phone.
Can I use these as conversions in Google Ads?
Yes. Import ahoya_lead_captured or ahoya_booking_requested as a GA4 key event, then bring it into Google Ads as a conversion.
The chat isn't showing up. What do I check first?
Whether the container is published, not just saved. After that, check that the page's domain is on your allowed-websites list in Ahoya — an empty list allows every site.
